Virtual Private Servers and User-mode Linux apparently draw from IBM's Virtual Machine (VM) inspiration. There's an article on O'Reilly Network about using User-mode Linux for practice shooting, which reminds me somewhat of how MkLinux made use of Mach's ability to run multiple personalities servers.

I'd forgotten about this article of Dave Winer's. "We needed a content management server that allows text editors to hook in, and we must have a text editor that can connect to the content management server."

Quark thought something similar with Quark Publishing System, and again with QuarkDMS. Adobe started thinking outside of their locked box with the WebDAV support in InDesign, but I don't know how far they've gone.

Content management, document management, media asset management, workflow management, each attempts to be monolithic and omnipresent, and fails. Can you pick up my content, and without any prior knowledge of it, allow me to edit it with pretty much anything? Can I step outside the flow without breaking it?

Disney's cheap penny-pinching miserliness austerity measures have taken their toll on more than just the maps. We've travelled to DisneyWorld four times in the last seven years. This last trip was the first time we stayed on Disney property, the first time that a Disney employee was less than considerate, and the first time we saw trash on Main Street U.S.A.
