Writing Online

on my (ab)use of Radio Userland
 Tuesday, December 04, 2001

I'd forgotten about this article of Dave Winer's. "We needed a content management server that allows text editors to hook in, and we must have a text editor that can connect to the content management server."

Quark thought something similar with Quark Publishing System, and again with QuarkDMS. Adobe started thinking outside of their locked box with the WebDAV support in InDesign, but I don't know how far they've gone.

Content management, document management, media asset management, workflow management, each attempts to be monolithic and omnipresent, and fails. Can you pick up my content, and without any prior knowledge of it, allow me to edit it with pretty much anything? Can I step outside the flow without breaking it?

Looks like Radio Userland may have some non-Microsoft competition.
