Plain Text is Not Rich Text

Dear Microsoft,

Plain text is not rich text, so why does the edit control in Outlook Express behave like it is?

I mean, it's nice that you're trying to be helpful in maintaining the styling of text that I copy and paste into my e-mail, but that's more than unnecessary when I'm pasting into a plain text message. Not only will the pretty formatting be lost when I send the e-mail, but it distracts me from my writing. ASCII art just doesn't look as good in a variable-width font.

What's the point? Encouraging a cross-grade to Outlook? You must be kidding.

Little Encouragment

Joel Spolsky says
Smart companies try to commoditize their products' complements.

Zimran Ahmed says

Firms need to figure out whether they're best served by commodity complements (that move down the demand curve) or integrated complements (that can shift the demand curve out) and then do that.

Meanwhile, John Robb says, in another context,

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a mechanism to motivate the last mile providers to deploy the fiber. Nor is there one to force them to pass on price improvements and improved bandwidth that the current doubling rate in price/performance of fiber is able to provide.

I certainly haven't hit on something yet. Not that I'm in a position of influence or anything.
