Plug and Go

c|net says Mac users get more ISP choices, as if there were any problem with a lack of choice among dial-up ISPs. What is missing is good support, of the phone kind.

What is offered here other than a client installation that attempts to configure PPP, while overloading your system with software you already have, or advertisements that you do not want? For the person who is not already connected to the Internet, he simply needs a phone number to call and a few sheets of paper. A good client kit, and one which should have been available long before now, is merely one which replaces the phone number and paper with a short form and some scripting:

  • Who are you?
  • Where do you live?
  • How do you want to pay me?
  • What username would you like?
  • What password do you want with that username?

Now if access providers could get over PPPoE and just assign a private address from a DHCP pool, then broadband setups wouldn't require even that. Just plug in the wire and go.
