Television Repair

I speak of repair of the hardware, not the industry. A while back our brand spanking new Philips 27″ television mysteriously began denying that it had any knowledge of electricity. Our GE died after 12 years, so we expected the Philips to last a bit longer than four months. So, we called Philips regarding the situation, and, so sorry, we only cover labor for 90 days, feel free to take it to Stanton TV in Danbury, CT, for repair.

The unit has two components: the CRT and the circuit board. It’s simply a solid-state, single-purpose computing device attached to various means of I/O. It took longer to unscrew the back than it does to remove the board and swap it. But, after arguing the point with “Support,” it appears Policy prevents them from sending me the part. I might shock myself, after all. (Maybe I shouldn’t mention the Macintosh SE/30 lying disassembled on the floor of the basement.)

So we took it in. It’ll be $75 for the labor, they say.

Time passes.

“What’s taking so long?” I ask. “We’re waiting for parts.”

Time passes.

“Well?” “We’re troubleshooting the problem.”

Time passes.

“And?” “We’re waiting for parts; they should be here by the end of the week.”

Time passes.

“Oh?” “We’re troubleshooting the problem.”

Right.

They called today to tell us that it’s ready. If they think we’re paying for four weeks of labor, they have another think coming. I can pick up a Bigger, Better, More Feature-Rich Boob Tube at Wal*Mart for under $300. Why would I pay to have this one repaired?

Why doesn’t Philips do as Dell does, and send a guy to swap parts? Or, like IBM, just send the part?

  1. Philips 32PT6441/37 – same problem with 3 blinks/2blinks/1 long blink. I am sending a mail to the Philips “Resolution Owner – Consumer Relations”, in the link Tim mentioned above, and shall wait to see if it helps.

  2. My wife likes to watch Sex and the City, and unfortunately the TV decided to stop working, in the same manner. We bought it in October of 2004, and 12 months later, it just is totally inert and dead. It did turn on for the first 2 seconds or so, so I think it is a fuse. Now my wife misses Mr. Big.

We bought a returned product at Best Buy that was $45 less. From reading this, it appears we were lucky to even get 13 months off of this.

I will try to do the fuse repair suggested here.

  3. I have a Philip Model 27PT543S37A. It to stop working only the green light is on, but nothing else. Anyone have a fix for this problem?

  4. My Philip’s went out at 10 months.

I found that the fuse had blown (but didn’t look blown).

It just got weak and opened without blackening the glass.

I went to Radio Shack and bought a package of 4 fuses:
    Radio Shack No. 270-1056

The fuse that comes in the TV is 4 amps.

I replaced it with a 5 amp fuse.

    Been working great since!

  5. I tried the fuse fix last night after reading the suggestions on this website. Its really quite the simple fix, its very apparent which fuse is the one to change, and as someone mentioned earlier, its located near the cord. I’ll preface this by saying that I’ve never once taken an appliance apart before, but figured this was worth a shot. I used a needle-nosed pliers to reach in and pull the old fuse out and popped the new one in by hand. The tv now works perfectly! Thanks so much everyone for posting their solutions, you saved me a bundle of money.

  6. I am amazed to see how crapy this TV is… Same problem with the 27 flat. One day it just decided to not turn on anymore. Worked for 6 months or so, bought at Best Buy. Repair store quoted me $150.00!! I am going to try the fuse repair as I don’t get any LED codes. I will never buy Philips again! Thanks for your postings!

  7. I am an attorney who was contacted by a colleague of mine who had very similar problems with his MT 1331/17. I am investigating a possible class action against Philips/Magnavox, but need to get some more information as well as possible persons to be willing to represent a class. Sometimes a class action is the only way to move matters like this forward. If anyone has any interest in discussing the matter further or might be otherwise willing to assist in developing a possible class action, please feel free to email me at sgeorge@sheller.com.

  8. I have 32PT6441/37, bought it in 1st week of APR and last night it flickered once and then it started flashing and lost the video. only sound for a few seconds then nothing, seems like that power light flashes a particular “code”. The bad news is I bought it thru PHILIPS ONLINE – Refurbished item, so it does not have any warranty [ expires in 90 days]. I used to trust Philips products, not any more and I am writing this to save your time money and stress.

  9. my parents have the same 27 inch model that just quit working tonight… the day before Thanksgiving. This one replaced a Sony that was struck by lightning-they were thinking that they were just having a run of bad luck with TV’s, but after reading this website it looks like Phillips has produced a lemon. The right thing to do would be to issue a recall, but if the expense of a recall outweighs the number of complaints, I don’t think they will be concerned about “the right thing”. Undoubtedly, I will call Phillips, they will give me the runaround, and continue selling these TVs to unsuspecting consumers. But we’ll see…

  10. Well folks another 32PT5441 32″ Phillips has been laid to rest tonight (for now anyway, it might come back to life). I purchased this damn tv in April of ’04 and tonight while i was watching a great movie, my tv did the same thing that practically everyone else’s has done..sound for a few seconds, green blinking light, clicking noise, acts like its going to show a picture..and NOTHING!!! I bought mine at Best Buy, “assumed” that Phillips was a fairly decent brand so opted out on the warranty, i thought wrong..NO more Phillips! I will have to try the repair kit that Tim mentioned earlier.
Hey Scott, let me know when you start that class action!

  11. This is too……. funny!! I bought a Phillips 27″ TV at Best Buy in January 05. About 3 weeks later I went to turn it on and it just wouldn’t turn on. So fortunatly I was able to take it back and exchange it for the exact same thing. That was in February and just this week the same thing happened with the second TV. I called Phillips and gave them the info and they said to call a local repair place and it would be taken care of. I called them and they said our warranty was 1yr parts 90 days labor. They indicated it would be 50$ to bring the TV in (not to mention my time hauling these TV’s all over town). They said it would be and average repair cost of $110. I told them to KMA! If Phillips couldn’t make a TV that would last a year I wasn’t going to pay a third or more of the purchase price to fix it. They gave me this long line about how “small” tv’s don’t last anymore. I called Phillips back and told them and got some little satisfaction out of telling them their products were shoddy and I would never buy another one. So I went to Best Buy and bought a Samsung 24″ for 234$.

Knowing I had nothing to lose I took the cabinet back off the Phillips. Knowing a bit about electronics…. I inspected the board for problems and low and behold….. I found a FUSE. Turns out there is a 4 amp FUSE that handles power surges. It is totally inaccessable to the average customer.

To make a long story short… I went to Ace Hardware and bought a 4amp fuse for $1.45 and that fixed the TV.

I plan on calling these people back because I know they are all laughing knowing the full time it was a FREAKIN FUSE!!!!!!!

THERE OUGHT TO BE A LAW!!!!

  12. Funny thing happened when I went to check out what the Phillips website had to offer in terms of support. When I stated in their interactive support section that I had no power I got the following two reasons: 1. Poor power connection between the television and wall outlet. 2. Wall outlet is defective.
I just wanted to see if they would even come close to addressing this issue that apparantly every customer that purchased one of the tv’s has had, or will have. I will be calling them tomorrow about this. My son needs his NOGGIN! Good luck to all.

  13. Guess I’m just another statistic at this point. Mine is the 27PT6442/37, we got almost 11 months out of it so better than most. Worked fine last night, dead this morning. From reading the above I too am disgusted with the apparent lack of care by Phillips for their customer base, their product, and their name. A Phillips product will never again cross my threshold or that of any of my family. Thanks to all for your instructions and advice – I’m off to Radio Shack!

  14. Hey guys, quick question… I am about to purchase a philips 27pt8302 HDTV through my work so the warranties and everything are still in tact. the price for this is a steal because someone brought it back and now its marked down to about 50 bucks lol… ok here’s the problem. When the TV is plugged in, and the pwr button is pushed, the green LED light is on indicating that there is power. The TV then makes the sound that its turning on but in return; no image. i pushed the button a few times to examine the same results. But after the last time i pused it, it appears that there is a beep (or flash code) of on then off for 3 seconds, then on again then off for 3 seconds, then flashes 3 times then off for 3 seconds. I sat there and watched this, and it seems like there is a pattern of this repeating itself until i pull the plug. Is this a “FUSE” or something that can be fixed easily? If so Please post a msg back becuase i want to buy this TV asap if possible. I don’t know how much Philips is going to charge therefor im calling tomrorow to see. If i can get this tv for 50$ for an HDTV 27″ and fix it with a 2 dollar fuse then im sure as hell am going to buy it!!!!! Thanx guy, and good luck!!!

    -Jr-

  15. Be careful with the whole ‘just replace the fuse’ deal. I finally got Philips to pay for the repair, when the tv repariman came out he put another fuse in and as soon as he plugged the tv in the new fuse blew, mine had a power supply problem on the circuit board that caused the fuse to blow.

  16. just off work, cold beer, couch, and a dead TV. 27PT6441/37 is what the back of it says. consider myself both handy and lucky with repairs; off to the shack after phil’s wake. big up to all yall for your testimonials and suggestions… wish me luck, for apparently these may be my last written words unless i charge the fuses and sign a receipt. cheers

  17. …and i survived. new fuse from radio shack works, you’ll need a t-bit driver for yr screws, and it’s very easy. thanks again for the help people

  18. I want to thank all those who wrote about the problem with the Phiilps TV suddenly losing power. Mine is Model No. 27PT 6441/37 and I bought it in March of 2005. I just replaced the fuse and it is working again. Thanks also to the writer who mentions the need to remove 9 screws. (Spent a little time searching for that 9th screw) I bought a package of No 270-1066 Slow-Blow fuses (250 volt, 5x20mm, GMA type) at Radio Shack for $2.63. Package had 4 fuses, so I figure I can fix it three more times if I need to. BTW, the fuse did not look like it was blown but probably defective in the first place. I feel like I just stuck it to Phillips.

  19. Well just like everyone else here I have a dead Philips TV, model 30PW8402/37. It worked almost a year before it decided to go on vacation. Sure enough it had a bad fuse but when I replaced it, the new one blew as soon as I plugged the power cord in. 🙁

Do I need to replace the same part as stated in earlier posts? I’m not sure what to do since I haven’t seen anyone w/ the same model with this problem.

This thing is a complete waste of money…

  20. We have the same problem. Our 27″ Phillips TV also went out after 6 months. Thanks to your journal, we are on our way to get the fuses
from Radio Shack. Will let you know if this work. Betty is still
writing Better Business Bureau, because we bought the last TV 6 months
ago, and they are still selling this at Circuit City on Elston in Chicago, IL.
    Please don’t buy it!

  21. Okay everyone, we were watching “The Triangle” on the Sci-fi channel, and thought the TV went into the 5th dimension, but it was the fuse!

What we are about to explain is for the 27″ Phillips TV…

Jeff and I went to Radio shack and bought a package of No. 270-1067 Pkg of 4 Slow Blow 5-Amp, 250-Volt Fuses (these are the short fuses), and then went to Ace Hardware, and bought a T10 screwdriver to remove the eight torx screws.

It takes a total of 10 minutes with two people. We place the TV carefully
on it’s face (TV screen), and removed the 8 screws to remove the casing
in an upward movement. It may sound like you are breaking something, but not to worry. The fuse clamps are in the lower-half of the back panel of the TV. It is tight, so small hands are better to reach it, and try to pull
it out of the clamps. If this doesn’t work, we had to use a very little screwdriver to pry it out of the clamps, but be careful that it doesn’t fall to oblivion.

Anyway, good news! After 10 minutes of time, we are back in business, for how long we don’t know.

Thank you Coxesroost.net for this journal. Hope this helps other.

  22. I feel like I need to join the ranks. Purchased a Philips 32PT5441/37 17 months ago. Stopped working…..flashing lights in a sequence. Such a bummer. Does anyone know the corporate headquarters address for BBB purposes? I will pursue this as much as possible before giving up and fixing it myself!!!!

  23. Same here. I diagnosed the problem as the 250V, 4A fuse. I am knowledgeable enough to replace a fuse myself, but I feel bad for everyone who isnt. Still, if I have to take apart my TV and replace a fuse every few months, I will get really annoyed. I wonder if I should try a fuse with a slightly higher amperage rating…

  24. Hello to all. just had the same wonderful experience that you all have had regarding your Philips Television purchase and I am trying to resolve the issue as so many of you have done. My feeling is I should not have to look for fuses, repairs or anything, that Philips should replace/repair the set at their own expense in my home. I sent e-mails today to that effect, (no phone contact on saturday) threatening action if no immediate response, etc. Can anyone tell me if there has been any movement toward any type of legal action regarding this? My set lasted 4 months, turns on for about 10 seconds, with the white screen/squiggly lines, and then shuts off. Then flashes an error code. The code, if I remember is one flash, pause, 3 flashes, pause, 11 flashes, pause, then repeat. 27PT6441/37. Does this sound like it could be just the fuse? Thanks for any help

    InsureAmerica@earthlink.net

  25. Tim or anyone..discharge the set? A little help there please. It’s been along time since I had to open anything up.
Also would like email addys and telephone numbers for Philips. Can’t find much on thier site. Besided football is on in a couple of hours and I need to get to RadioShack.
    tia

  26. I guess I should feel luckly that my 27″ PT8ISI lasted 5 years. But alas as I watched it 2 months ago I heard a pop and no power. I would like to try the fuse replacemnet but the set has been in the shop for 2 months. I may go get it and try it myself. If that does not work I may mail it back to phillips in little pieces and let them know I will NEVER by another Phillips Product!

  27. I just wanted to thank people for posting their fixes on this website. I want to add that the 9th screw on the 27″ is between the AV inputs on the back. It took me a while to find, but I figured it out pretty quickly when I popped the back off and the board came with it. The fuse on mine was very obviously blown, and replacing it worked. It pisses me off that my tv died after 14 months, but I feel pretty darn good knowing that I can do simple fixes if I need to.

  28. Wow.same thing happened to me..t.v. sat for two days before I searched and found these posts..went out to radio shack and bought the talked about 4 amp fuse.and bingo..it works..only thing be careful not to unplug audio cable..you’ll have no sound…great site

  29. I have the infamous 27PT6441/37 27″tv. And I also am fully aware of how red-tape-ish they can be. I have sent numerous emails to their tech dept, communications, marketing, and even the CEO in Germany. I have received no response as yet. Oh, I also sent them this thread.

The fuse that blew is T4E250V. A couple circuit geek friends of mine say it’s a 4 AMP/250 V deal, but I do not know whether or not to get Slow or Fast blow. I assume I want to try the Fast Blow first, to avoid shorting everything out. What do you guys suggest?

  30. Here’s what I sent them…

    Hello Sir or Madam:

I am an American consumer who purchased a 27″ Philips “Real Flat” TV (model# 27PT6441/37). I’ve had it for about 18 months; just long enough for the warranty to run out, and the power button fuse to blow. I have tried contacting technical support, but they claim that they are not authorized to send me the fuse that blew. I have taken the fuse to a number of electronics shopes, but they are all unable to read the notation written on the fuse. I cannot replace it without knowing what type of fuse it is. It is literally a 10 penny item, and I refuse to pay for a TV repair man to fix it.

The television is worth less than $300 (US dollars), and it could cost nearly that much to have it fixed by an authorized service department. I suspect this is precisely the reason the fuse is “in code” to begin with. However, for the money it would cost me to have it fixed, I would much rather go out and purchase a new TV of a different brand name.

The fuse reads: T4E250V. I simply need to know A) if it is slow or fast blow fuse, and B) how many Amps/Volts it is. I would be impressed if you went ahead and sent me a new fuse, free of charge. However, if you cannot, I would settle for the information as requested.

I understand that this may not be your department or your area of expertise, but so far Philips’ telephone tech support has been a complete waste of time. Please be kind enough to forward this email wherever it needs to go, if you do not have the answers to my request.

Furthermore, I understand Philips’ liability in allowing consumers to open their TV sets and replace internal parts. I also understand that I have voided my warranty by removing the fuse myself. (Even though my warranty was pretty much expired anyway.) However, since this is clearly a simple blown fuse, I would like to think you will exercise common sense. Send me the fuse, and I will stop bugging you.

    Thank you so much.

    RCA Still Working Fine

    PS.

I will be sending this email to as many officials as I can, including CEOs, other executives, and technical department people. I will be calling as many Philips related numbers as I can find. I will also be posting, on several electronics forums and chat rooms, this email as well as unbiased accounts of your responses to my inquiries. As yet, I have only negative, undesirable news to report about your company and its refusal to respond to my problem in a timely and courteous fashion.

  31. I have a Philips 27PT543S37A. It is the second one from Best Buy. I had to take the first one back because of a high pitched noise that drove me nuts. I thought it was a problem with that peticular set so I let them simply swap it. I bought it in Feb. ’04. A few weeks ago I noticed that when I turned the set on,the picture was only Half the screen and tried to expand….at such time it just went black. If i turned it on and of a dozen time the picture would eventually fill the screen and played fine. That situation quickly deteriorated and now the screen wont come up at all, arrggg!! My mother had a Magnavox the served her well for 15+ years and seeing how Philips is in (or was?) cahoots with them, that this would be a wise purchase. NOTHING could be farther from the truth!! Needless to say that this will be my LAST Philips purchase!! I’m interested in the class action motion many here have spoke of. Someone has to fix Philips total lack of caring in this matter. My contact info is wizarwar22@yahoo.com. Good luck to all in resolving your problem!

  32. Thank you so much for this website. My son called me today frantic. He started with “Why ME”, my luck is so bad. He also purchased the Phillips
27PT6441/37 and this morning it was DOA.
I was speechless because I couldn’t believe that the TV would die in 4 months. Found this website and started reading to him all the letters about the same problem. As we talked he opened the set and the fuse was NFG.
Thanks everyone for your help. Phillips should be ashamed of themselves for selling garbage and not standing behind what they make.

  33. Hello! Thanks for all your comments on this awful 27PT6441/37. I was watching TV and the 27PT6441/37 went power off suddenly. I tried so many times to power on the set and had no luck. After reading this website I came to know that I wasn’t alone. Please let me know how to put the fuse on —I just need a clear description of it as I am going to open a TV for the first time in my life.—-Thanks

  34. I just purchashed Philips 32PT71B1 from someone, had sound for a minute and guess what? No sound at all. Checked everything. Almost seems like something is loose or shorted behind the button panal. Beautiful picture though. Any suggestions on how to get behine the button panel so I can maybe fix that before it dies totally? I can push any button and get cracking sound, but when left go, no sound.

  35. have a 15 inch lcd philips # 15PF9925/17S died after 2 yrs, black scrn, some research i did suggests it might be a lamp, after reading all these posts it may be a fuse..will try to find an authorized dealer in my area..

  36. Those who are having the problem with simply no power, or sudden loss of power with the 27pt6441/37 philips model. I was trying to peice together a connection between us all. My TV was produced in November 2004 and I noticed that so was Asaad’s. Maybe Philips had their heads up their butt and let a bad batch be installed in their sets in November.

    November anyone?

  37. It worked! I can’t believe it! I am so glad I didn’t even bother to call Phillips! I have the Phillips 27PT6442 (though I think it just means it’s black). Same deal, but mine made it from July 2004 until December 2005. It just went dead – no power suddenly at turn on. I tried the 4amp, 250 volt Radio Shack fuse for $2.89 (pack of 4, slow blow, small, RS#2701066) and darn if it didn’t work! The T-10 screw driver is a must, though. I was still able to get the 9 screws out and back in with an allen wrench. We will see how long it lasts as the lights in the room still dim when it comes on, but at least I have 3 more fuses! Thank you internet for saving me time and aggrevation!

  38. I purchased my television set model # 27PT6441 Phillips about 7 months ago. I heard a turn on sound then it turn off by itself before the green light went on. there was a humming type of sound for several minutes afterward.

THis is the second set in two years that has busted within a year of purchase. The first set was a magnovox, same company.

THis has to be and should be considered CONSUMER FRAUD!!!
I would like to start a petition against this company, to eventually start a CLASS ACTION SUIT. Please respond with any thoughts and/or comments. Thank you.

    Sincerely,
    Diana Orlando

  39. I also have a 32PT6441/37 Phillips that went dead. Here is my problem. TV at 4 months old just shut off. Green light flashing code. If you turn it back on it shuts right off again. I unplugged it for a couple weeks and it came on for about 3 hours and shut off. Try turning it back on it shuts off in seconds again. Can anyone tell me what I need to fix this and where to get the parts? I saw comments about a fuse but that’s not the problem here. Thanks

  40. Same problem with the 27″ for the 2nd time. First time was fixed under warranty since it had only been two months. The repair guy showed us that it was the power fuse and how to fix it. This last time it’s lasted almost a year.

    Never again with Phillips!

  41. My modle 27PT6441 Phillips just stopped working yeaterday.
As it being Sat. I could not get through to the customer service dept. The set is less than a year old. BUT thanks to my genius daughter she found your website and gave me aheads up on the problem, so we gave it a shot to replace the fuse and it worked(who said blonds can’t fix anything). It saved me the time and hassel not to mention the money to have it fixed. Thank you all for your input and yes it was easy to do…

  42. I woke this morning and went to turn on my Philips 27PT6441 to watch the news and the power button totally ignored me – once the coffee finished brewing, I unplugged the unit and I took out all the screws on back. The back easily lifted off. I immediately saw the scorched fuse. For those of you with older cars, it’ll look familiar. It’s held in place with spring clips and easily pops out. I ran it over to Radio Shack and they found a replacement (I bought two just incase the problem happens again.) I installed the fuse, put the cover back on, replaced the screws, plugged it in and started watching the news. Yes, this was an annoyance but it was a lot better than having the repair man come out to fix it! If my 75 year old mother was strong enough to lift the TV, she’d be able to make this repair.

  43. I have also had the runaround with philips and Best Buy on my 27 inch flat screen, mine went the 1st time 33 days after purchase 3days to late to return it to best buy, and to make a long story short, it is indeed the fuse that keeps blowing !!!4 times as a matter of fact, philips will not replace tv stating that it is a minor repair. now they will only pay for the fuse, what great guys!!!It makes me wonder if best buy gets stuff that will die after warranty expires just so they can sell you their warranty(which isnt as great as they make it out to be) any how I have had the best luck going around customer support and going straight to Terry A. 44. Our children gave us a 27 Phillips tv Christmas last year (2004) within 2 months it too stopped working. They took it back to Best Buys and they gave us new tv. Well within 4 months or less, this tv stopped working. We took it to our local repairman and asked him what would make them stop working like this and he laughed and said it is a Phillips. Anyway, he installed a new fuse and it worked for approximately 6 months until yesterday when it just made a noise and stopped again. The green light is blinking whether tv is tured on or off and at one point it made a noise that sounded like it was going to catch on fire and at that point we unplugged it from electrical source. We are going to attempt to replace the fuse, if that doesn’t work, we will buy another tv, NOT A PHILLIPS!

  45. Just checking in again to see if anyone out there can help me with my TV.

    Here’s my previous post:

Well just like everyone else here I have a dead Philips TV, model 30PW8402/37. It worked almost a year before it decided to go on vacation. Sure enough it had a bad fuse but when I replaced it, the new one blew as soon as I plugged the power cord in. 🙁

Do I need to replace the same part as stated in earlier posts? I’m not sure what to do since I haven’t seen anyone w/ the same model with this problem.

This thing is a complete waste of money…

  46. I feel like the lucky one here….my 277PT6442/32 lasted an entire 13 months! Meanwhile, my Magnavox has lasted 11 years. Is there any way to convey our complaints directly to Philips? I’m going to try to fix my TV tomorrow, but this shouldn’t even be an issue at this point in time. What a piece of garbage and waste of money. Never again will I buy a Philips.

  47. I have a 52″ RCA Model#p52770. The TV Works perfect except it has no SOUND on the CABLE stations. The sound works fine on basic channels, vcr, dvd, etc. I was told it could be the cable coaxle, but I figured if that was out I would get no picture at all, but the picture is perfect there is just no sound just for the cable stations. Any sugestions???
