Barriers to Passage

Jon Udell noted that Panama has required blocking of the UDP ports used by VoIP. The Linux and Main article cited notes that this was done on the request of Cable & Wireless.

Meet the New Boss

I have never had much love for party politics. The Republicans are not the Root of All Evil and the Democrats are not the Spawn of Satan. (Or maybe I should remove those negations.) Neither are they the Party of God or the Party of the Common Man, no matter how they wish they were.

But some people like parties, so I've read a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth since the election, and a fair amount of crowing and lustful claiming of mandates. The Christian Science Monitor notes that the shift in Congress was the result of a few percentage points here and there. That's nothing like overwhelming support. I'm still worried about the creation of this police state — that Democrats as much as Republicans are helping to build.

Ubiquitous Computers in Education

Glenn Fleishman points to a Wired article on Maine's laptop experiment, "Laptops Not Yet Maine-Stream." I think it's interesting to compare that experience with one using PDAs to help a research project.

The Maine project, like Henrico County's, saturates the student body with computers without having much clue what they intend to do with that saturation. I'm actually fine with that; uses will arise.
