Incremental Upgrades

A journaling file system for Mac OS X? [eWeek via Archipelago] Now that Apple has got a move on with Mac OS X, they seem intent on adding nice-to-have features in an incremental manner. No need to include the kitchen sink — we'll put it in later.

It will be interesting to see how Apple's release early and often implementation compares to Microsoft's.

City of Glass

However, the construction and financial requirements of building out fiber-optic connections to homes make it impractical or wildly expensive in urban regions and other areas with a developed infrastructure. As a result, fiber-to-the-home services are largely becoming available in new housing developments or in smaller cities with municipal governments willing to take on the costs and headaches of recreating their infrastructure.
Study: Fiber-optic to make itself at home [c|net via Archipelago]

Mark Paschal notes that The New York Times observes A nervous public wonders, Is the sniper one bar stool over?

Yes. A few years back — I haven't found references online yet — someone was shooting people on the LIE, in a manner not unlike that in the Capital Region.

One of my wife's cousins worked for an auto-parts supply shop. One night he and the boys were joking, each claiming to be the shooter. One of them was very insistent that he was. Yeah. Right. They laughed it off.

A few weeks later, the cousin found a rifle in the back of the van he was taking out for deliveries. It seems his co-worker had forgotten to remove it after the previous killing.
