I, being the slow sort, just realized something about fragment identifiers. HTML 4.01 has two types of fragment identifiers: id and name attributes. So does XHTML 1.0, but there name is deprecated. So, assuming that you wish to move from HTML to XHTML, you will choose to use id instead of name. However, the range of values of these attributes is different, because of their differing datatypes. What does this mean?

This means that during the course of a conversion from HTML to XHTML, some URIs will break — unless steps are taken elsewhere, outside of the document, to prevent such breakage.
